What Is OCD?

It’s natural for us to have occasional worries that we have forgotten to switch off the grill or be concerned about contamination when somebody coughs near us. Likewise, it’s common to have fleeting, disturbing thoughts. But for somebody living with OCD, obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors are so frequent they interfere with day-to-day life.

Essentially, OCD is a branch of anxiety disorder manifested by uncontrollable thoughts and repetitive behaviors that you feel impulsed to carry out. For those with OCD, it is often clear that these obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors are irrational. Yet, despite this, they feel compelled to act on them.

OCD causes the brain to get stuck on a particular thought. For example, you may fear fires in the house which causes you to check the grill thirty times to be sure you turned it off. Other people may have an intense fear of germs, and so they may wash their hands obsessively to remove any germs.

It’s important to note that enacting these behaviors doesn’t necessarily provide any joy, though they may offer a brief sense of relief from the anxiety created by the obsessive thoughts.

Obsessions and Compulsions

Obsessions are impulsive thoughts, images, or urges that reoccur in your mind. Usually, the individual doesn’t welcome these thoughts and ideas, but it’s virtually impossible to stop them from happening. These obsessive thoughts are often alarming and uncomfortable.

Compulsions are behaviors or routines that you feel compelled to act out repeatedly. Often, compulsions are executed in an attempt to drive away from the obsessions. For example, if you’re anxious about germs and contamination, you might create extreme and elaborate cleaning routines. However, the relief never lasts, and the obsessive thoughts return. In fact, it is common for obsessive thoughts to come back more intensely. This becomes a vicious cycle, as the compulsive routines can end up causing high levels of stress and anxiety as they become more demanding and all-encompassing.
